The photo captures the moment in which Leo Messi is lifted
into the air by the fans at Camp Nou just seconds after Sergi Roberto’s decisive
goal. The Argentinian is standing on the advertising hoardings, celebrating the
goal that gave Barça a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League with
the fans.
The man who took the photo, Santiago Garcés, found himself
just metres away from Messi. He ran from the photographers’ area to find a
place behind the goal when he saw the Argentine celebrating the goal on his
own. “I believed in the comeback and I stayed close to the fans,” explains the
41 year old Mexican photographer who has worked for Barça for four years.
The mayhem following the goal meant that photographers’ area
was filled with fans and in midst of the pushing and shoving and even kisses
from certain fans, Santiago Garcés was able to snap “around 50 photos” amongst
which the best was the shot that has become the most popular ever at FC
Barcelona in the new digital age.
